SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. – Two Bulldogs took singles victories and both tandems recorded a doubles victory on Friday in the opening rounds of the Battle of the Bay.

Diploma Morgan coppoc and senior Meg kowalski each opened the battle of the bay in a winning way. No. 1 seed Kowalski beat Colorado’s Megan Forster in straight sets, while No. 3 seed Coppoc beat the Leyden Games in Southern California in a tiebreaker in the third set. First year students Guillermina scholarship and Mai Nirundorn showed bursts of promise but fell off in their college debut.

In the round of 16, Coppoc entered an exhilarating game with Caroline Pozo of Colorado. After falling in the first set, Coppoc fought back to win the second set, 7-5. She followed with a 14-12 tiebreaker to advance to the quarterfinals. Klara Kosan of the Pacific beat Kowalski in a heartbreaking third set tiebreaker, 10-7.

Coppoc, from Tulsa, Oklahoma, faced Pepperdine’s Anastasia Iamachkine in the quarterfinals on Friday night. Adding to a day of domination, Coppoc beat Yamashkin in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. She will face VCU’s Paola Exposito Diaz Delgado in the semi-finals tomorrow (September 18).

In doubles, number 1 seeds Grant and Kowalski knocked out the Colorado tandem of Campos and Bui 8-2. Coppoc and Nirundorn teamed up to defeat the No. 4 seeds McBride and Desiatnikov (San Diego) 8-3. Both Bulldogs teams will be on the field tomorrow (September 18) in the quarterfinals.
