Robert L. “Bob” Mang Obituary

Robert L. “Bob” Mang, 89, of Punta Gorda, Fla. died Sunday, March 6, 2022 at HCA Florida Fawcett Hospital, Port Charlotte, Fla. Bob was born May 8, 1932 in Massillon, Ohio to the late Harold C. Mang and Lena (Meidlinger) Mang. Robert graduated from Massillon Washington High School and went to Miami University from Ohio to receive a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Accounting and Finance. He graduated from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University and completed senior banking studies at Columbia and Harvard universities. After college, Bob spent two years in the US Air Force as a pilot and six years flying for the Ohio Air National Guard. Bob held various positions at Republic Steel from 1956 to 1967, then began his banking career as Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager for Harter Bank in 1967. He was later promoted to Vice President in 1971 of Commercial Loans and to business development. In 1976 Robert joined United Bank as an executive vice president and member of the board of directors. He was named chief operating officer in 1983 and chief executive officer in 1986, then president of the bank in 1987.
Bob has held directorships with the Stark County Development Board and the Canton Art Institute. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of Mount Union College and served as a Trustee, Senior Vice President and President Elect of the Canton Grand Chamber of Commerce. Bob loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He loved sailing, photography and travel.
He is survived by his loving family, his daughters, Lisa A. Mang Ahlstrom (Robert E. Ahlstrom) of Punta Gorda, Florida and Elizabeth E. Mang (Richard S. Simons) of Cape Coral, Florida; son; Robert G. Mang (Susan E. Mang) of St. James City, Florida; sister, Annette M. Darby, of Yorba Linda, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Margaret A. “Peggy” Mang, of Massillon, Ohio and Margaret V. “Bonnie” Maurer (McArdle), of Canton, Ohio; grandchildren: Samuel RM Ahlstrom, Catherine EM Ahlstrom and Maximillian M. Simons; and many nieces and nephews. Bob was predeceased by his brothers, Harold J. Mang and Ronald E. Mang; his wife and mother of their children, Rosemary E. Mang (McArdle), and his second wife, Lois E. Gleckler Mang.
A Memorial Mass will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 211 W. Charlotte Ave., Punta Gorda, FL 33950. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, 25200 Airport Road, Punta Gorda, Florida 33980.
